5 advices to keep it shining and ready for your best days

    By DemoneRosso | 01 December 2021 | 1 min

The best day for the motorcyclist?  The opening of the riding season!  For some people it starts very early, for other a little bit later but for everybody the last weeks of cold weather are the moment to start planning the first rides and to prepare the equipment.

First it goes the motorcycle: battery, tires, oil levels, brakes. Then, it is time to look at the clothing: suit or jacket, it’s good to clean the leather or the textile and then move onto the helmet.

The helmet is a different type of clothing:  not like gloves or boots. It is the warrior helm: it wears our colors, it intimidates our opponents in the track and it makes us visible on mountain roads.  That’s why it deserves our full attention and care, with a good cleaning before the season starts.

    1. Freshen the interiors

Removable interiors are great as they can be hand washed at low temperatures (max 35°) and with gentle soap. They should dry out in open air without exposure to heat or sun. Before fixing them back on your helmet, it is important to ensure that every section is dry to prevent internal moisture.

Sometimes a cleaning can’t fix it and the interiors needs a complete change: AGV helmets feature removable interiors of different sizes. If your helmet doesn’t feature removable interiors, a wet cloth can help but unfortunately it doesn’t do much.  Better get an helmet with removable ones.

    2. Shine the shell

This is an easy one: all you need is a specific cleaner and a soft cloth such as AGV one. Otherwise just water and soap: sometimes dirt is hard to remove and it is better to let it soak until it comes away easily.  Do not apply too much force as this might damage the helmet outer finishing and leave scratches.

    3. Wipe the visor

The same process used for the shell works for the visor.  Above all, be aware of hard debris and do not apply too much force to prevent scratches.

    4. Tear offs, not only for race

If you never used them, consider using a tear off.  Born on the track but not exclusive to racing, this sticker lens protects the visor making it last longer.

    5. Change your visor if needed

If your visor had too much life on it, don’t think it twice and consider replacing. Seeing correctly is the first safety so it is important to keep a clear view.  If you ride in humid and cold days, a Pinlock lens will make a lot of difference.

Conclusion: a great way to spend time

Our helmet is an important part of our individuality as bikers.  With a little bit maintenance we can extend its life and increase the pleasure of wearing it.  For many, it is a zen ritual to clean it as part of the love that most of bikers share for their helmet.
