The greatest “revolution” introduced by FIM is tests on oblique impacts, which, instead, are not considered by the ECE law. In fact, these impacts enable a more accurate simulation, perfectly recreating what usually happens in real life. Oblique or angular impacts are extremely harmful as they provide dangerous rotations of the rider’s head. Recent scientific studies show that most brain injuries are caused by rotations of the head and the FIM regulation is the first one to force producers to measure and limit them.
Moreover, compared to ECE, the FIM certification differentiates linear impacts, making a distinction between high (8,2 m/s) and low (5,0 m/s) speed. This ensures the highest performance on a wider range of impact forces. In addition to these tests, on the same points of the ECE law, the FIM homologation adds linear impacts at high speed on three further points of the shell, together with penetration tests.
